ART Science Communication (SciComm) Awards aim to support young science communicators in promoting innovative and creative communication strategies and/or creating resources and tools for promoting greater transparency on animal research.

The proposals are evaluated by an independent jury and sums of up to €3.000 will be awarded for projects starting in 2025. The deadline for submitting proposals is October 31st, 2024.

The following conditions apply:

  • The submitted proposals should describe a detailed plan to develop creative communication approaches and/or creating resources and tools to promote positive views on – ethically responsible – animal research for the benefit of science, humans and animals.
  • ART SciComm Awards are aimed at all science communicators, which also includes journalists, teachers, researchers and/or technicians with a passion for science communication and public outreach. Applicants without an academic track must upload certificates documenting their education. We look forward to applications from all nationalities and geographical regions. If you have applied before but did not get funded, we encourage you to apply again.
  • Funding is available to cover expenses directly linked to the development of the proposed work plan, including, but not limited to, acquisition of equipment, software or services, short travel expenses, teaching materials, venue spaces and/or hosting of events. The ART Award money can NOT be used to cover institutional overheads, salaries or stipends. Please note that Animal Research Tomorrow (ART) cannot enter any grant agreements/contracts with the host Institution as this is an ART Award not equivalent to any grant by funding agencies.
  • All deliverables from ART SciComm Awards will be made freely available via a Creative Commons License.
  • Animal Research Tomorrow requires full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations that govern national and international data security and privacy. For example, collection of data from human participants (text, images or videos) must be approved by a human ethics committee or equivalent local regulatory body. All data, images, videos of research involving animals used must be connected to licensed projects. If applicable, proof of license requests or copies of valid licenses for the proposed work plan must be submitted as part of the application procedure.
  • Animal Research Tomorrow Awards must be acknowledged in all media (e.g. websites, videos, posters, presentations) and in all publications resulting from projects supported by an ART SciComm Award.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to respect and abide by all local, national land/or EU laws and regulations relevant to perform the research project. The applicant must obtain all necessary permissions and licences before the ART Award project can be started. ART is in no case legally, financially or otherwise responsible for any expenditures or liabilities arising during execution of the ART Award project.
  • A report covering the execution, results and conclusions of the ART Award project including details of the financial expenditure must be submitted within 3 months after completion of the project.
  • Payments will be made in EUR to the institution of the ART Awardee.
  • Any change concerning the project, budget or grant agreement must be communicated in writing for approval by Animal Research Tomorrow.
  • In the spirit of the Basel Declaration and transparency in animal research, the awardee and its institution shall communicate the results of research funded by ART SciComm Awards to the general public. This can be done on the institutional website, using social media and/or as part of outreach activities.
  • ART has the right to revoke or suspend the ART Award if the responsible awardee fails to fulfil any of the rules and obligations listed in this guide to application and execution of the project. In case of such violations, ART may request partial or total refund of the ART Award of €3000.
  • The ART Award agreement is governed by Swiss law and subject to jurisdiction at Swiss courts.

  • Main objectives of the work plan
  • Detailed description of the planned activities, their justification, target audience, and methods involved.
  • Justification on why the proposed work plan, institution, applicant, and team (if applicable) are
  • Description of the expected outcomes and deliverables of the proposed project (e.g. educational tools, guidelines, protocols, multimedia, publications, events)
  • The potential benefits in light of an improvement of animal research communication, public knowledge and attitudes. The applicant must also include brief a benefit/harm evaluation and the rationale supporting the likelihood of obtaining said benefit.
  • Must include a final paragraph describing for what the ART SciComm Award money will be spent.
